Part of the hotel’s “Unfolding Legacies” anniversary programme, the experience takes inspiration from Light of Bangkok, a fragrance created specially to commemorate the property’s 150-year history. Bangkok Captured Through Fragrance
Light of Bangkok was created by Thai perfumer Pissara “Ploi” Umavijani, founder of Parfums Dusita in Paris. The fragrance draws inspiration from Mandarin Oriental Bangkok Hotel’s atmosphere, including its people, interiors, hospitality traditions and distinctive celadon-green palette.
Its opening notes combine bergamot, sage and lemongrass, followed by a floral heart of jasmine, ylang-ylang and orris butter. Sandalwood, vetiver and musk form the deeper base, creating a fragrance intended to capture both Bangkok’s character and the warmth associated with the historic riverside hotel.

For Umavijani, seeing the perfume interpreted as an afternoon tea gives the anniversary creation another dimension, connecting aroma with flavor, craftsmanship and memories of the hotel.
Perfume Notes Arrive on the Plate
Executive Pastry Chef Pablo Gicquel has translated the fragrance into an afternoon tea menu where individual dishes reflect some of the perfume’s defining aromatic notes.
Among the savory selections are bergamot-marinated scallop with ylang-ylang and jasmine-scented crab accompanied by young coconut. Pea and pandan are enhanced with vetiver, while tuna is paired with beetroot and orris. A richer combination of foie gras, truffle and sandalwood completes the savory journey.
Sweet creations continue the theme with bergamot tea cake, jasmine vanilla cake served with mango jam and ylang-ylang banana pie. Whisky chocolate accented with sandalwood adds a deeper flavor, while a special 150th-anniversary chocolate sablé combines lemongrass with jasmine ganache. Traditional scones and seasonal fruit preserves complete the afternoon tea.
