Originally established in 1888 during the reign of King Rama V, the Custom House once served as Thailand’s gateway to the world, welcoming merchants, diplomats and travelers arriving in what was then Siam. This Bangkok Hotel News report highlights the remarkable transformation of the national landmark into an intimate riverside sanctuary while preserving its rich architectural and historical significance. The restoration ensures that one of Bangkok’s most treasured buildings begins a new chapter, welcoming a new generation of international visitors.
Heritage Meets Contemporary Luxury
Managed by Langham Hospitality Group, the hotel features 75 luxury accommodations, comprising 60 guestrooms and 15 suites. Rather than recreating the historic complex exactly as it once appeared, the project respectfully pairs the restored heritage buildings with a modern accommodation wing that complements the original architecture while providing world-class luxury facilities.
Designed by acclaimed Thai architect Smith Obayawat, Founder and Principal of OBA, the new curved structure draws inspiration from the movement of the Chao Phraya River. The architect describes the relationship between the two buildings as “the grandfather and the grandson,” symbolizing the connection between Bangkok’s rich past and its future.
Elegant Accommodation Inspired by Thai Culture
The guestrooms and suites offer a sophisticated residential atmosphere featuring natural materials, warm metallic finishes and The Langham’s signature understated elegance. Guests can enjoy views across landscaped courtyards, the Bangkok skyline or the Chao Phraya River.

Design details celebrate Thailand’s cultural heritage throughout the accommodations. Sculptural brushed-metal bathtubs reference precious metals and historic coinage associated with the prosperity of King Rama V’s reign, while geometric etched patterns echo traditional Thai temple mosaics and classical architecture. Bespoke lighting subtly incorporates royal symbols and ceremonial motifs, creating interiors that balance contemporary comfort with authentic Siamese influences.
Guests can choose from four accommodation categories: the Classic Collection, River View Collection, Pool Terrace Collection, and the luxurious Specialty Suites, each designed to deliver exceptional comfort within an exclusive riverside setting.
Historic Buildings Become Social Destinations
The restored Main Custom House Building, together with two additional heritage structures, including one of Thailand’s earliest post office buildings, forms the social heart of the property. These beautifully restored spaces will house restaurants, bars and elegant event venues, allowing both hotel guests and visitors to experience Bangkok’s architectural heritage in a vibrant new setting.
Among the culinary highlights is T’ang Court, the internationally acclaimed Three-Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant, which will headline the hotel’s dining offerings alongside another signature restaurant. Together, these venues are expected to become major additions to Bangkok’s luxury dining scene.

Wellness and Exclusive Experiences
The contemporary accommodation wing also houses the renowned Chuan Spa, inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine and The Langham’s internationally recognised wellness philosophy. Guests will also enjoy a state-of-the-art fitness centre featuring Technogym’s premium Sandstone Collection, marking the first installation of this luxury fitness equipment range in Asia.
Beyond the hotel, personalized experiences will include private Chao Phraya River journeys and chauffeured Bentley transfers, reinforcing The Langham’s commitment to delivering exceptional luxury service.
Prime Riverside Location
Situated in the heart of historic Bang Rak, the hotel offers convenient access to many of Bangkok’s leading attractions, including ICONSIAM, Asiatique The Riverfront, Chinatown and the creative district of Charoen Krung, renowned for its galleries, cafés and cultural venues.
The riverside location provides guests with the opportunity to experience Bangkok’s rich heritage while remaining close to the city’s premier shopping, dining and entertainment destinations.
Leadership Welcomes a New Era
Langham Hospitality Group Chief Executive Officer Bob van den Oord said the company is proud to see the historic Custom House preparing to welcome the world once again after serving for generations as Thailand’s gateway to international visitors. He said the guestrooms, suites and luxury amenities have been carefully designed to reflect both the remarkable heritage of the site and The Langham’s distinctive approach to hospitality.
