Hotel News: A New Era of Hospitality Begins in Singapore
Las Vegas Sands has officially begun construction on a groundbreaking US$8 billion ultra-luxury resort that promises to transform Singapore’s hospitality and tourism landscape. Designed by the world-renowned Safdie Architects, the new project will sit adjacent to the iconic Marina Bay Sands and is envisioned as a future benchmark in high-end travel experiences.

During the elaborate groundbreaking ceremony held on July 15, Singapore’s Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Lawrence Wong, officiated the event alongside Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, and Las Vegas Sands executives Dr. Miriam Adelson, Chairman and CEO Robert Goldstein, and President and COO Patrick Dumont. This Hotel News report highlights how the new development—referred to for now as IR2—will be a major leap in design, scale, and purpose, pushing the boundaries of what integrated resorts can offer.
A Dazzling Architectural Marvel
The centerpiece of the development is a spectacular 55-storey hotel tower featuring 570 suites. Rotated at a 45-degree angle to maximize views of both Marina Bay and the Singapore Strait, the structure’s twin wings will gracefully arc into the skyline. Capping the tower is the revolutionary Skyloop—a 76,000-square-foot rooftop experience composed of overlapping elliptical volumes spiraling in opposite directions. It will offer 360-degree views, luxurious public observatories, lush gardens, restaurants, and secluded experiences like private cabanas, infinity pools, and wellness spaces for yoga and specialty events.

Beneath the hotel, a multi-level podium will house approximately 200,000 square feet of premium meeting and convention space. At its core will be a 15,000-seat arena designed by Populous, the globally acclaimed firm behind the Las Vegas Sphere and London’s O2 Arena. This venue is set to become one of Asia’s most important destinations for live events, from concerts and sports to global conventions.
Sustainability Anchored in Design
Sustainability plays a vital role in the resort’s development, in line with Las Vegas Sands’ Sands ECO360 global strategy. The project incorporates biophilic design elements inspired by Singapore’s lush greenery and aims to integrate native Southeast Asian plant species into its landscaping.

Architectural innovations will also reduce environmental impact. The building will feature a self-shading façade with high-performance glazing to reduce solar heat gain, internal blinds for cooling efficiency, and sustainable materials like low-carbon concrete and recycled steel. Every suite will include its own private terrace and garden, while outdoor restaurants will provide shaded canopies for comfort.
A dedicated construction waste management plan ensures that at least 75% of site waste will be diverted from landfills, with onsite segregation and recycling protocols firmly in place.
A Cultural and Entertainment Powerhouse
The new resort goes beyond just luxury accommodations. It’s envisioned as a cultural hub, complete with fine-dining venues, high-end retail boutiques, and a strong commitment to entertainment. The integrated arena will cater to high-profile international touring acts and immersive productions, helping to elevate Singapore’s status on the global live entertainment circuit.
The groundbreaking celebration was itself a testament to this vision, with more than 220 guests treated to live performances by Singaporean artist Jasmine Sokko and Canadian singer-songwriter Henry Lau. The event also featured culinary previews from the resort’s future Cantonese restaurant, Jin Ting Wan.

To honor the occasion and SG60 celebrations, Marina Bay Sands premiered a specially commissioned film titled Nothing Comes by Chance—a tribute to Singapore’s resilience and vision. Directed by Kirsten Tan and starring acclaimed talents like Tan Kheng Hua and Pierre Png, the film celebrated Singapore’s cultural evolution and forward-looking spirit.
From Vision to Reality Amid Challenges
Originally announced in 2019, the project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and soaring global construction costs. Its initial US$3.3 billion budget has now more than doubled, reflecting inflation, labor shortages, and rising material expenses. Completion is currently projected for June 2030, with the grand opening expected in January 2031, pending government approval.
Yet despite these hurdles, Las Vegas Sands remains deeply committed to Singapore. Since 2010, the company has invested more than US$15 billion into the country’s tourism infrastructure. The Marina Bay Sands alone has welcomed over 500 million visitors, hosted more than 2,200 events in 2024 alone, and provided employment to over 12,000 team members, with a strong focus on local sourcing and SME partnerships.
A Bold Statement of Confidence in Asia’s Future
President and COO Patrick Dumont emphasized the company’s long-term vision:
“By the time our new ultra-luxury development is complete, Las Vegas Sands will have invested more than US$15 billion since we started operations in Singapore in 2010. This speaks volumes of our confidence in this region, and the potential that we continue to see in Singapore.”
He added that Marina Bay Sands had already redefined luxury tourism globally, and the next chapter would raise the bar even higher. The goal is not only to set new standards in hospitality but also to drive high-value tourism and provide a world-class platform for performers and event organizers alike.
Looking Ahead
As Singapore positions itself for the next wave of tourism, the upcoming Las Vegas Sands resort is set to become an iconic landmark for generations to come. Its blend of breathtaking design, cultural richness, and deep sustainability commitment showcases a unique fusion of luxury and responsibility. The resort aims to offer more than just opulence—it seeks to tell a story of vision, resilience, and future-ready hospitality that mirrors Singapore’s own journey on the world stage.
This new chapter in Singapore’s luxury tourism evolution not only reinforces its reputation as a global hub for business and leisure but also demonstrates what’s possible when bold ideas meet visionary execution. From its panoramic Skyloop to its sustainability-first approach, every element of the development signals a future where luxury, culture, and environmental consciousness coexist in perfect harmony.
