This Hotel News report confirms that the project will also feature two of Western Canada’s tallest residential towers, dramatically altering the city’s skyline and economic trajectory. Calgary-based Truman and its joint venture partner Louson are leading the $1.47 billion development, signaling deep confidence in the city’s future.
Truman Invests in Its Hometown Vision
Truman, a family-owned firm with over four decades of real estate experience in Alberta, is positioning this project as a key catalyst for Calgary’s growth. “We are incredibly excited to announce our newest hotel development right here in our hometown of Calgary,” said Tony Trutina, Chief Operating Officer of Truman. “This project will generate thousands of jobs, increase tourism, and support small businesses across the region. It’s an investment in Calgary’s future that we are proud to lead.”
With the city emerging from recent economic cycles, Truman’s massive commitment is being seen as a vote of confidence in Calgary’s long-term potential as a hub for both tourism and global business.
Marriott’s Bold Canadian Expansion
Paul Cahill, Chief Operating Officer for Marriott International in Canada, emphasized the significance of the deal. “W Calgary, JW Marriott Calgary, and the Autograph Collection Hotel are poised to usher in an unparalleled level of hospitality to this high-energy city,” he said. “Our collaboration with Truman and Louson, who are deeply rooted in Calgary, is perfectly aligned with Marriott’s vision of offering exceptional experiences through our premium brands.”

Marriott’s move comes as Canada’s hotel industry experiences a major uptick. According to industry performance data, 2025 has already seen record growth in occupancy and revenue, making this expansion both timely and strategic.
Three Iconic Properties in the Pipeline
At 69 stories, the W Calgary is set to become an architectural beacon in the city. The hotel will feature 157 guest rooms—including 27 suites—and 239 branded residences. Amenities will include a 7,500-square-foot Away Spa, a rooftop bar, a signature restaurant, 16,259 square feet of meeting space, a FIT Studio, and the W Living Room lounge. Residents will have a private entrance and access to all hotel facilities.
The JW Marriott Calgary, in a 62-story tower, will offer 248 guest rooms and 120 branded residences. Designed for sophisticated business and leisure travelers, the hotel will also offer 32,500 square feet of meeting space, an indoor-outdoor pool, the JW Market, a JW Garden, and curated retail offerings.
Meanwhile, the Autograph Collection Hotel, to be built within Stampede Park, will feature 320 rooms and 15,000 square feet of event space. Reflecting the brand’s tagline “Exactly Like Nothing Else,” it will offer 14,000 square feet of food and beverage options—including restaurants, a rooftop lounge with city views, a lobby bar, coffee shop, and a south-facing leisure terrace with a pool, jacuzzi, and bar. An indoor pool and wellness-focused fitness club will round out the amenities.
Fueling Calgary’s Culture and Entertainment Vision
The development is a cornerstone of Calgary’s broader downtown revitalization, particularly within the Culture + Entertainment District. The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), which has led the transformation through its Rivers District Master Plan, sees these hotels as a validation of years of strategic planning.
“Our shared vision for The Culture + Entertainment District as a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood is coming to life,” said Kate Thompson, President and CEO of CMLC. “Our public investment is now attracting transformative private development, like this Marriott project, that will support conventions, major events, and cultural experiences in The District.”
The Calgary Stampede—whose expanded BMO Centre is a major draw for international conventions—is equally optimistic. “With demand for meetings and conventions rising, these hotels elevate Calgary’s status as a premier destination,” said Joel Cowley, CEO of Calgary Stampede. “They also align with our legendary Western hospitality.”
Massive Economic and Employment Impact
In terms of economic value, the project will be nothing short of transformative. The $1.47 billion private investment from Truman and Louson is set to generate over 9,100 construction-related jobs and more than 2,000 permanent roles across hospitality, tourism, and hotel operations. These new properties will also help meet a longstanding need for luxury accommodations near venues such as the BMO Centre and the future Scotia Place event complex.
The project’s mix of hotels and branded residences reflects an emerging trend in global real estate—where living, leisure, and business blend seamlessly in one location. This approach not only attracts high-end travelers but also supports long-term economic growth through real estate, event hosting, and tourism synergies.
Calgary on the Global Hospitality Map
This massive Marriott expansion isn’t just about building more hotel rooms—it’s about reshaping how the world sees Calgary. Long known for its oil and gas heritage, the city is rapidly becoming a cultural, economic, and hospitality powerhouse. The new developments promise to attract international conferences, lifestyle tourists, and global attention.
What’s unfolding in Calgary is more than a real estate boom—it’s a reinvention of the city’s narrative. These three hotels are symbolic of a new, future-focused Calgary—where world-class hospitality meets innovation, culture, and community-building on a grand scale.
